The WDC welcomed Courtney Bentley as our first training apprentice. As our program continues to grow, we look forward to adding more educational opportunities this to our curriculum in addition to our current intern and veterinary extern programs.

Courtney shares this letter describing her experience at the WDC.

“My time at the Pen Vet Working Dog Center (WDC) granted me an excellent learning experience with very knowledgeable trainers. The opportunity to apply training concepts that I was already familiar with, to real life situations, was priceless. My interests in training over the past few years have gravitated towards law enforcement and military dog training, and the opportunity to learn under K9 Officer Bob Dougherty and WDC Training Director Annemarie DeAngelo was essential in establishing my knowledge in real world, tactical training. Additionally, WDC Training Manager Pat Kaynaroglu helped me gain experience in the world of Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) training with FEMA certified teams. I am so appreciative of any and all opportunities given to me during my stay. On a daily basis, I was exposed to all aspects of working dog training.

Some of my biggest takeaways include:

  • Being a part of training being done for research purposes (i.e., medical alert, cancer detection, and scent permeation studies)
  • Environmental evaluations for the “P” litter
  • In-service training with area police departments (narcotics, explosives, cadaver, and patrol)
  • USAR training with NJ-TF1 and NM-TF1
  • Attending the K9 First Aid Class led by WDC Director Dr. Cindy Otto.

Dr. Otto is simply one of the best veterinarians I have ever had the pleasure of working with! Her Fit to Work concepts are invaluable to canine health, and the Working Dog Center works to truly make their dogs the best they can be.

It was an absolute honor to be the Center’s first apprentice, and I look forward to watching the Penn Vet Working Dog Center grow into the “go to” place for canine excellence.”
